The Worst Advice Someone May Have Given You.

Sky DeGrate

Don’t Worry, We’ll Set You Straight.

We’re going to go over some pieces of advice you’ve (probably) heard over the course of your career; whether you’ve just started out or have been a musician for quite a while.

This video by Andrew Masters details all the nitty-gritty of the bad insights and harsh (but necessary) truths you’re definitely going to want to hear.

The 6 most common and worst pieces of advice someone can give you.

1) "SAY YES TO EVERYTHING"

Don’t figure it out later.

Know thyself.

Efficiency is key, we’re begging you now, please. Please. Don’t waste your time.

2) "NEVER QUIT"

Know when to quit. Evolution is key.

Growth is letting go and moving forward when something isn't working.

Know what works for you and what doesn’t. It’s a learning process.

3) "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC"

Only a fool would believe this. Don’t sell out.

Understand where your priorities as an artist and as a brand are.

4) "DON'T FORCE INSPIRARION"

Music is a career.

Practice is important to your development. Do you think MMA fighters only train when they feel happy?

Find people that inspire you so that you can work with them.

Seek out role models, writing, YouTube videos. How can you stay inspired?

5) "YOU'RE TOO OLD TO MAKE IT"

Find your demographic.

Music is relatable, you, whoever you are, I promise, you are relatable.

Don’t doubt your own brand because you feel like your starting place is irregular.

Confidence is key.

5) "THE NUMBER OF YOUR FOLLOWERS MATTER"

Focus on the people who actively engage with your content. Those are your base, your foundation, your core group.

You can’t build with a solid foundation, and what’s the point of a huge fanbase if none of them are actively listening to your music.

Do not sell out to the idea of fame, it is the absolute worst thing you can do. Instead deeply appreciate the people and groups that support you now.

LASTELY,

Selling out is not only terrible for your career as an artist but terrible for your livelihood as a creationist.

However, with the right direction and by taking these pointers seriously, you’ll be able to focus on the right avenues and go about your brand the right way.
